Commonly Used Date Rape Drugs

Drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) and drug-facilitated crimes involve perpetrators secretly administering drugs to victims to impair their cognitive and physical abilities. The goal is often to make them vulnerable to sexual assault, robbery, or other forms of harm.

Common Drugs Used

Methods of Administration

  • Spiking drinks with liquid or powder forms of the drugs

  • Coercing victims into consuming excessive alcohol

  • Using substances in vape pens or edibles

Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam)

A benzodiazepine often referred to as "roofies," causing sedation, memory loss, and confusion. It used to come as a white tablet that didn’t have a smell or taste. Drug companies now make it as a light green pill with a blue core. If someone puts it in a clear drink, the liquid turns blue. But some generic pills may not have the blue dye.

Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB)

A central nervous system depressant that can cause drowsiness, unconsciousness, and amnesia. It is usually a liquid that doesn't have a smell or a taste. But it can also be a white powder or pill. It may have a mildly salty taste.

Ketamine

A dissociative anesthetic that induces sedation, confusion, and immobility. It is a clear liquid or an off-white powder. You can’t smell or taste it.

Alcohol

The most commonly used substance in DFSA cases, either on its own or mixed with other drugs.
